Abalone is a strategy board game for two players, designed by Michel Lalet and Laurent Levi, in which each player controls marbles of opposite colors on a hexagonal board. The object of the game is to knock six of the opponent's marbles off the board. Abalone was invented in 1987. In 1999, a group of top players from the International Mind Sports Association reached an agreement to use an alternative starting position to revitalize the game. This position has been used in major tournaments ever since, including the AbaCup.
