When Manuel I the Fortunate, King of Portugal, visited the Alhambra Palace, he was captivated by the imposing beauty of the decoration, formed by ceramic tiles of Arabic origin which were called "azulejos".
Introduced by the Arabs, the tiles, originally blue and white ceramics, were adopted by the Portuguese after a visit by their King Manuel I to the Alhambra in Granada, where he was so impressed by the beauty that on his return he ordered his own palace to be decorated with similar tiles.
Azul is a board game that evokes the marvelous aesthetics of Moorish art. Players compete in the role of artisans who find themselves decorating the walls of the Royal Palace of Évora. The most skilled artisans must be able to plan in advance the right amount and style of tiles to achieve the most beautiful creations.
Players will choose, in a draft, colorful tiles that, in subsequent turns, they must place on their personal boards decorating the palace. Players will score points for making specific patterns and completing certain collections.
