Set in a parallel reality of 1920, Scythe is a 4x strategy game for 1 to 5 players (expanded to 7 players in the expansion "Invaders from Distant Lands"). In a time of farms and wars, each player represents a character from one of five Eastern European factions, who are trying to gain fortune and claim their position in the land surrounding the mysterious "Factory".
Each player starts with different resources (power, money, combat ability and popularity), a different starting position, and a secret objective. Factions have different abilities and characteristics, and each player's starting positions are calibrated to contribute to the asymmetrical nature of the game and the uniqueness of each faction.
To reduce waiting time between turns and keep games flowing at a steady pace, Scythe uses a dynamic and agile action selection mechanism that will allow players to save time and enjoy the game at all times. While there is plenty of direct conflict for players who seek it, there is no elimination system. Scythe offers players almost total control over their destiny.
Aside from each player's secret objective, the only elements of luck are encounter cards, which players will get as they interact with citizens of newly explored lands, and combat cards, which have minimal impact on player decisions, leaving randomness in the background.
