During the Renaissance, Italy was divided into numerous independent city states. Although they enjoyed opulence and buoyant trade, the envy of their neighbors increased their distrust, which led to the rise of the condottiere, ambitious leaders of powerful mercenary armies.
The object of Condottiere is to acquire four connected provinces in Renaissance Italy. To do this, players auction different provinces on the board and bid for these provinces with a hand of cards representing mercenaries, stations, scarecrows and political figures.
However, unlike standard auctions where only the highest bidder loses his bid, in Condottiere all players lose their bid. Players are, in effect, bidding the number of troops they are willing to lose to win a province. However, several special effects cards shake up the contests and keep players on their toes.
