In 1697, the Sun King, Louis XIV, emerged from a decade of war with his continental ambitions still unfulfilled. Meanwhile, King William III of England felt comfortable on his throne. With the unresolved Spanish succession crisis, no one expected the new century to be peaceful.
But neither France nor England foresaw the new conflict that awaited them: a second Hundred Years' War, during which these two tenacious adversaries would fiercely and proudly compete across the world. On battlefields from India to Canada and the Caribbean Sea, their armies and fleets clashed; in the salons of Paris and the cafés of London, the politics and economics of the modern world would be born; and finally, a revolution would shake the foundations of society, a revolution that could have ended not in blood and terror, but in a triumph of democracy and freedom that could have transformed the world beyond imagination.
Imperial Struggle is a board game for two players that depicts the 18th-century rivalry between France and Great Britain. It begins in 1697, as the two kingdoms cautiously await the King of Spain's choice of heir, and it ends in 1789, when a new order toppled the Bastille. The game is not just about war: both France and Great Britain must build the foundations of colonial wealth, deal with other European nations, and compete for glory.
