John Company is a game about state-sponsored commercial monopoly. Unlike most economic games, players often do not control their own companies. Instead, they collectively guide the Company by securing positions of power, attempting to steer the Company's fate in ways that benefit their own interests.
However, the Company is a difficult thing to manage. It's hard to accomplish anything alone, and players will often have to negotiate with each other.
In John Company, almost everything is subject to negotiation. Ultimately, this game is not about wealth; it's about reputation. Each turn, some members of your family can retire from their positions in the Company, giving them the opportunity to establish legacies. Critically, players don't have complete control over when these retirements occur. You will often need to borrow money from other players to make the most of the retirement opportunity.
Players also earn victory points by competing in the London Season for prestige and securing fashionable properties.
John Company takes its theme very seriously. It is understood as a frank portrayal of an institution that was as dysfunctional as it was influential.
As a result, the game addresses many key themes of imperialism and globalization in the 18th and 19th centuries and how those developments were felt at the national level. As such, this game may not be suitable for all players. Make sure everyone in your group agrees with this exploration before playing.
