Wayfarers of the South Tigris is set in the height of the Abbasid Caliphate, around the year 820 AD. As brave explorers, cartographers, and astronomers, players set out from Baghdad to map the surrounding land, waterways, and sky. Players must carefully manage their caravan of workers and equipment, and periodically report their discoveries to the House of Wisdom. Will they impress the Caliph or lose their way and succumb to the desert?

The goal of Wayfarers of the South Tigris is to be the player with the most victory points (VP) at the end of the game. Points are mainly earned by mapping land, water, and sky. Players can also earn points by improving their caravans, inspiring nobles, and influencing the three guilds of science, trade, and exploration. As they make discoveries, players will want to quickly record their progress. The game ends when a player's marker reaches the rightmost column of the journal record.
