John and Katherine Smythe, Viscount and Viscountess of Wessex, had watched with envy as the new energy swept through Derbyshire. Their Jacobean ancestral home, one of the largest and oldest in the county, had become increasingly difficult to maintain during the years of scarcity. The family had twice sold off large tracts of productive Derbyshire countryside to avoid more drastic measures.

Meanwhile, the artisans arrived at neighboring Ponsonby Estate. The Viscount of Wessex's valet, James, discovered that Ponsonby had inherited a fortune from a wealthy uncle, and everyone could see that the Earl was determined to make the most of it.

But the Viscount of Wessex had a plan. His resolute wife, who felt a strong connection to the estate, finally agreed to sell a strip of fertile riverside land to a wealthy Duke, who intended to use one of the largest areas of the purchased land as a hunting ground.

Soon the land would change hands, and that's when the game would begin!
