Crew! This is the commander of the star cruiser speaking from the command center. The planets in the system need us to ensure free trade and keep the pirates at bay. If we work hard, our fame will spread throughout the galaxy.
As the officer in charge of a newly restored star cruiser, you will lead a team of conscious beings who have dedicated their lives to the ideals of the Cooperative; cooperating for strength, negotiating for peace, and exploring for knowledge. Your crew may lack experience, but their enthusiasm makes up for it. They will surely learn a lot from you on this journey. And although your ship may have some scratches and dents, it only proves its resilience. In your hands, it will become the best ship in the Fleet.
It's an exciting time to be in command of a ship. There is so much to do, and if you don't do it, another captain surely will. So, if you want to make history, you'll have to take the plunge!
Designed by Peter B. Hoffgaard, Starship Captains is a strategy game that can be enjoyed solo or in groups of up to 4 people, for ages 12 and up, with game sessions lasting a little over an hour.
To win, players must accumulate the highest number of points after 4 rounds. There are many ways to earn precious points: completing missions, managing interstellar diplomacy, developing technologies, collecting artifacts and medals, defeating pirates... In Starship Captains, the main mechanic is based on selecting actions, represented by rooms within the ship. After all, as the commander, you must assign the most suitable tasks to your crew based on the needs of each moment.
There are 4 different types of rooms: piloting, for moving the ship; weapons, for fighting pirates; science, for acquiring technology; and repairs, where damages to our spacecraft can be fixed. Each turn, you must choose one of your crew members to occupy one of these rooms... But be careful! Each crew member is specialized and knows how to operate specific devices.
Although everyone (even the cadets) can repair the ship, for the other three rooms, you'll need to choose a specific crew member, who will have the same color as the room. Once used, crew members will need to rest, so they may not be available in the next turn. Plan your strategy well!
To earn points, one of the main methods is to complete missions available throughout the galaxy. You must travel with your ship and instruct your crew to complete different tasks in order to fulfill them. Throughout the game, you can also eliminate pesky pirates (who cause damage to ships), level up in 3 faction markers according to your diplomatic activity, form and promote our crew to make them more efficient, or obtain valuable artifacts.
Another challenge posed by Starship Captains is that many of the objects or new rooms you acquire will share space with the damages suffered by the ship, so don't forget to make periodic repairs if you want to keep progressing. With a moderate difficulty level, Starship Captains is an ideal title for those who are already familiar with the hobby of board games and want to take it a step further. With many choices at your disposal, but not enough time or means to execute them all, planning will be key to achieving the highest score.
